Project Edison Phonograph
The Edison C19 Diamond Disc Phonograph and Records
The C19 Phonograph (also referred to as "Official Laboratory Model" by the internal gold-plated seal/medallion), came out in 1919A.D.; as of putting this page together in 2018A.D., that makes it almost 100 years old. This particular model was claimed to be the top of the line for phonographs of the period and was the upgrade from the older C-250 model. A C19 Phonograph cost approximately $295.00USD in 1919A.D. which equates to $4,407.55USD in 2018A.D. [link]; the phonograph price is based on the Edison phonograph pricelist I was able to obtain (see more about it below). In 2006A.D. the market price range for the phonographs were $800.00USD - $1200.00USD. In 2018A.D. (12 years later) the Edison C19 Phonograph crafted from White Oak, in great condition, have been seen for sale in the marketplace starting at approximately $4,000.00USD.

The "C" in C19 stands for Chippendale. Some of the features of it include:
  • diamond stylus
  • laminated rice paper diaphragm
  • variable speed turntable
  • volume control
  • double spring motor
  • 15" internal horn
  • slotted cabinet for 72 records (.25" thick) - the entire phonograph, measuring 22.5"x21"x51.0625" (LxWxH) and approximately 160lbs, was crafted from Mahogany (red or brown), White Oak, Fumed or Golden.
The Phonograph remained a hot, in-demand product until the mid 1920's when radio became the new, in-demand product to have [link]. Some time later, television got in on the action and then the internet...

The Edison Diamond disc records sold in a range from $1.15USD - $4.25USD; that would equate to $17.18USD - $63.50USD in 2018A.D. The 10" diameter Edison Diamond disc records were manufactured for 80RPM play speed and the "L" and "R" stamps indicated how to orient that record face in the cabinet as it was common to store the records on their rim or side instead of stacking them flat. The early records released had a glossy black surface and half-tone electrotype which were not as easy to read as paper labels introduced in the early 1920's. The sound groove was vertical. It was not until 1915A.D. that the names of artists were included on the records. Starting in 1921A.D. black paper labels were used and in 1923A.D. were changed to white paper labels.

On this page you will notice that Columbia Graphophone Company disc records and Victor Talking Machine Company disc records are also shown (these records have a lateral sound groove). All of these competitor disc records were part of the Edison disc record collection that came with this particular Edison C19 Phonograph. From what is understood the disc records of competitors would not play in the Edison phonograph and visa-versa - unless you had a 3rd party adapter.

Speaking of a 3rd party adapter, it just so happens that I located one of these rare kits that allows you to play records, like Victor, on the Edison Phonograph. More details of Walsh's Universal No.6 Attachment is given below. The faded, hand-written, price tag indicates it was either $3.15USD or $13.15USD at the time; that would equate to $47.06USD or $196.47USD in 2018A.D. I tend to lean toward the latter with the number of precision crafted items and the nickel and gold plating having been used.
